RIC VI, HERACLEA [before 3], MAXIMIAN HERCULIUS, UNLISTED REVERSE LEGEND

OBVERSE

MAXIMIA-NVSAVG [MAXIMIANVS AVG]; head r., laur.

REVERSE

VICTORIAE-SARMATICAE [VICTORIAE SARMATICAE]; the four princes sacrificing over tripod before archway in six-turreted enclosure. HЄ in exergue.

NOT IN RIC

UNLISTED REVERSE LEGEND. RIC lists for Maximian Herculius only shorter legend VICTORIA SARMATICA (HERACLEA 3). Note, however, that this coin could be HERACLEA 10b from unlisted officina Є (RIC lists only officina B).

General note from p. 521: "As noted above, the only type [of silver coins] found at Heraclea is the 'four princes at sacrifice' type which in so many mints elsewhere introduces the reformed silver. It falls into three main issues. The first is likely to have been that marked HЄ, i.e. from officina 5 only. This includes the reverse legends Providentia Augg, Victoria Sarmat and Sarmatica, and Virtus Militum. All four rulers are represented, but the surviving evidence shows no more than one ruler to each of the four variants; probably this was original patern".

Coin should be listed before HERACLEA 3.

NOTES

Argenteus. Weight 3.24 g; diameter 19 mm. Coin sold on Astarte web auction 1 (lot 163) in July 2023 for CHF 240.
