RIC VII, NICOMEDIA 90, CONSTANTINE I, ENGRAVER'S ERROR [RETROGRADE OBVERSE] [IRREGULAR COIN]

OBVERSE

GVASVNIT-NATSNOC [GVA SVNITNATSNOC (retrograde)]; head l., laur.

REVERSE

PROVIDEN-TIAE[AVGG] [PROVIDENTIAE AVGG]; camp gate, two turrets, no doors, star above, varying number of stone layers. SMNΓ in exergue.

NOT IN RIC

ENGRAVER'S ERROR. Coin similar to NICOMEDIA 90 except for retrograde obverse. Apparently an engraver's error. But note also dots in the top row of stone layers and diagonal lines near doors - decoration not attested for Nicomedia. Probably an ancient imitation.

NOTES

Weight 2.53 g; diameter 19 mm. Coin sold on eBay in May 2015 for EUR 81 [Thanks to the collaboration of Mariusz Graczyk].
