RIC VI, ROMA [before 1], MAXIMIAN HERCULIUS, UNLISTED ISSUE [HERCVLI DEBELLAT]

OBVERSE

MAXIMIA-NVSPFAVG [MAXIMIANVS P F AVG]; head r., in lion's skin.

REVERSE

HERC-V-L-IDEBELLAT [HERCVLI DEBELLAT]; Hercules stg. l., fighting Hydra with club in r. hand. PROM in exergue.

NOT IN RIC

UNLISTED ISSUE. The mark PROM was already known to Cohen (cf. Cohen, vol. VI, p. 517, no. 254) and to Voetter (cf. Sammlung Bachofen von Echt, Wien 1903, p. 133, no. 2329). Also Percy H. Webb - the author of RIC V - mentioned that "the exergual mark PR is common on aurei of the new style before and after the Reform. PROM appears after that event" (RIC vol. V, part II, p. 214). Unfortunately, entire AV series with PROM m.m. was omitted in RIC VI, in error.

Note that so far four different rev. legend breaks are attested: C-V-L-I, L-I, I-D and D-E, which could make in RIC four separate entries (cf. TREVERI 802 and 807 or SISCIA 61 and SISCIA 62).

Listed in Cohen, vol. VI, p. 517, no. 254. Listed in Depeyrot (p. 83, no. 9/6; rev. break not given, specimen from Canessa cited).

Note also that Depeyrot lists as no. 9/7 type which description is virtually the same except for rev. legend break D-E. However, for this type specimen from Ratto 1955, lot 1082 is cited, but actually it has different bust (head r., laur.), rev. with Hercules stg. r. and rev. legend break I-D.

Should be listed in RIC before ROMA 1.
